High/Low: Brass Candle Sconces for Shorter Days
Each winter as the sun sets earlier and earlier, I unabashedly revel in the dark, hanging a lit paper star in the window, keeping candles lit from the time I have my first sips of coffee to when I get into bed (early) at night. This year, I’m admiring an iconic Swedish candle sconce—and a curiously similar version for half the price. Take a look:
High
Above: Swedish co. Skultuna was founded in 1607 by King Karl IX, and it remains, some 415 years later, “purveyor to the Royal Court of Sweden.” Among their iconic designs is the Pendel Sconce Candle Holder: “The famous silversmith Pierre Forssell worked as an in-house designer at Skultuna between 1955 and 1986,” the company writes on their site. “Forssell designed this slender sconce, Pendel, which has become an iconic Skultuna product, in the later part of the 1950s.” It’s made from polished brass that adds an extra glow on dark winter days; $100 from Skultuna.
Low
Above: Similar in spirit and silhouette is the Vela Wall Sconce Candle Holder from CB2, created by former fashion designer Brett Beldock. It’s available in blackened brass and can be used with either a taper candle or a votive; $49.95 from CB2.
