Gift Guide 2024: For the Techy Aesthete
Each year, it seems as though there is a new tech gadget (or gadgets) brought to market right around the holiday that inadvertently become the go-to gift for the tech-loving recipient. We all have that tech buff in our lives, and/or are one ourselves, so we thought it might be the right moment to address the enduring and good-looking tech goods that make the cut. Here are our favorite tech-forward gift ideas with design in mind.
N.B.: Being that the below edit is made up of tech devices, prices range from a little above average for a typical gift to very generous levels.
Above: The LG Cinebeam A 4K Smart Portable Laser Projector acts as a nice alternative to a large TV set in the living room as well as an attractive way to project outdoor movies. While it requires a power source, the projector weighs only three pounds and is compatible with iOS/MacOS, Android devices, and streams content from Netflix and Apple TV; $799.99 at LG.
Above: For a tech-forward gift that’s decidedly not a digital screen, consider Vestaboard, a timeless messaging display built for the modern home. Inspired by the departures display at the Gare du Nord station in Paris, each Vestaboard is composed of 8,448 spinning flaps that deliver custom messages, thoughtful reminders, and beautiful designs set from your phone. Available in Flagship Black and Vestaboard White; $3,295, in partnership with Vestaboard.
Above: The noise-cancelling headphones from Sonos, the Sonos Ace Headphones, features 30 hours of battery life for listening to music, podcasts, taking calls, and the like while traveling or commuting, and features dynamic head tracking for watching movies and TV at home. Plus, the headphones are good looking, available in soft white and black; $449 at Sonos.
Above: The Ome Smart Knob replaces the standard gas or electric stove knob for the ability to control ranges remotely, set cooking timers to turn off burner, and notifications if the burner is left on: an efficient home tech solution to the typical question “Did I turn off the stove?”
Above: I recently learned a little about the inefficiencies and potential disruptions to city-wide composting in my area, having me reconsider the idea of composting at home. The Vitamix Eco 5 FoodCycler is good-looking and nearly effortless, reducing the volume of food waste up to 90-perfect and removing food scraps and leftovers from the landfill; $599.95 at Vitamix.
Above: In a range of finishes, the Oura Ring is a slightly more stealth approach to wearable tech tracking than most. A product of Finnish craftsmanship, the Oura Ring 4, shown, tracks sleep, activity, stress, heart health, and women’s health; prices starting at $349 from Oura Ring.
Above: For real insight into the air quality of your home, office, or anywhere you inhabit, the Awair Element Indoor Air Quality Monitor displays realtime monitoring on the device or app showing temperature, humidity, CO2, TVOCs (Total Violatile Organic Compounds), and PM2.5 (particulate matter 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter) levels; $209 at Awair.
Above: The Hatch Restore 2 Smart Sleep Clock is a household standard for those looking improve a sleep routine offering sleep sounds, a bedside light option, dimmable clock, sunrise alarm. Overall, the Hatch offers an alternative to phone alarms (aka phones by the bed) while still retaining some tech specs that appeal; $169.99.
Above: As a proponent of low lighting in the evenings, I have and love a few of the Lutron Caséta Smart Lighting Lamp Dimmer. Added to a table lamp or floor lamp, it allows for dimming at the outlet or with a remote (that can be mounted to the wall next to standard switches) as well as scheduling lights via the Lutron app; $119 at Next Tech Energy Systems.
Above: For the home fragrance aficionado, consider Pura, a design-friendly diffuser you can control from your phone. We particularly like the Pura Plus, suitable for larger spaces and ideal for parties and gatherings. Our favorite part? The option to set your scent intensity: strong, medium, and subtle. It’s $79.99, in partnership with Pura.
Above: Samsung’s The Frame, a flatscreen that doubles as framed art when not in use, features a series of unique partnerships with The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The MoMA, The Musée d’Orsay, and most recently, Art Basel. The Frame has a matte, anti-reflection surface that resembles a piece of framed art. The 75-Inch Class The Frame 4K TV (LS03D), is $2,999.99.
